Description:
Photograph taken off the California Coast, probably aboard the Velero IV, around 1950 is an image of G. Allan Hancock holding the camera from the benthograph. The benthograph was inspired by an earlier attempt with a manned diving vessel called a benthoscope, which broke a record for manned deep diving but failed to produce useful photographs. Hancock commissioned Dr. Nelles to produce an automated camera that could operate at great depths. The benthograph was tested in 1950 and produced hundreds of deep-sea photographs before being lost off Catalina in 1952.
