Carpinteria Asphaltum Mine
Description:
"Carpinteria Valley News reported a grain field is rapidly transforming into a well developed mine located on the bluffs at Higgins Ranch. One car a day, or fifty tons, is now being shipped to the Goleta road district where asphalt is being used in the construction of the public highway. The strata where the crew is now working is over twenty feet thick and is of the purest material nature produces." Edson Smith Photo Collection no. 583
